Felix had been kind enough to point them in the direction of an Inn and had lent them some coin to pay for lunch, but as soon as they had arrived at the front door of a pub that looked way too dark and sketchy to be part of the Land of Light, he left.

The girls claimed a table while Ares charmed his way into the nicest meal he could possibly manage, a pint of brytos for him and two fruit juices that were neither mango nor alcoholic for the girls. The barmaid seemed to fall for the obvious lines and fake smiles Ares put up to win some free dessert. Lily could spot the young girl’s blush from miles away and she found it amazing how Ares managed to keep his eyes focused on her instead of wandering off to the girl’s voluptuous bosom. Even Clara seemed to be distracted by it.

“No wonder it’s packed in here,” she said as she turned back to Lily. “She could be a real bitch, those curves do the selling for her.”

Lily watched as the girl tossed her blonde hair over her shoulder, giggled as she brushed a hand against Ares’ arm and when he turned around she moved on to the next hungry customer. Men were practically hanging over her counter, money ready in their hands and eyes wandering everywhere aside from her face.

Lily couldn’t help but look down at her own hands, arms, stomach, and legs. Munera’s sun had done a lot for her appearance. It had hydrated her skin, brought a pretty blush to her cheeks, and darkened her hair. She felt better, but she was still the same scrawny kid Oliver Rodney had called anorexic in third grade.

Ares put the plates down on the table and took place next to Clara.

“You’re worrying,” he noted as he saw Lily looking down at her hands. For a second she thought that he knew, that he could read on her face how she wished for Clara’s height, the barmaid’s curves, the long lashes of the girl with the silk scarf that had passed them so quickly but who’d left a permanent mark in her head.

But she had many worries and Ares probably couldn’t care less what she looked like.

“About what Myrah said?” Clara questioned.

That too. Lily nodded.

“I told you, it’s nothing more than superstition,” Ares repeated. He took a bite from his bread, shoving the beans on his plate to the side with his fork. “Normally, when young Enchanters first start their lessons they are taught the elements first because they are easiest to manipulate,” he began to explain. “Some of the elders still believe that the element they first call on decides their path in life.”

“Like Byron Adaima,” Lily remarked and he nodded his head.

“His first spell was fire and he became a mad King, an unfortunate coincidence if you ask me.” As Lily and Clara took careful sips of their juice, Ares drank half his cup of brytos down in one go.
